Professor LI received his bachelor degree and master degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1988 and 1991 respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University in 1996. Prior to that, he was a Ph.D. candidate in Worcester Polytechnic Institute. After graduating, he worked in Sarnoff Corporation as a member of Technical Staff till 1999. Professor LI joined the Microsoft Research Asia as Co-Founder/Principal Researcher/Research Area Manager. He had also served as the Corporate VP and Co-President of Research in iFLYTEK from 2018 to 2020. Professor LI contributes on developing disruptive technologies in the areas of image/video processing, analysis, coding, streaming and communications; multimedia content analysis and search; machine-learning and AI; computer vision; web-based multimedia technologies and systems; multimedia-driven computing; multimedia and HCI; context-based intent and data mining; extension of multimedia technology into IoT and cloud-edge-client computing; wireless and mobile systems; interaction and collaboration between devices; big data and social computing; internet technologies and business models; open IoT and AI platforms, robotics and apps. Professor LI is a person with extraordinary vision and remarkable achievement on both technology and academic. He has over a dozen technology transfers to Microsoft and others’ key products used by hundreds of millions of people; contributed 20 technical white papers to Microsoft Strategy (Bill Gates) Think Week; and holds 202 granted US patents. He has published 66 journal papers, 230 conference papers, 1 technical book and 8 key book chapters; and edited 5 conference proceedings. He submitted 37 technical contributions to international standards and 8 core technologies adopted. Professor LI was honored with 6 best paper awards and 2 best paper finalists. According to Google Scholar, as of February 2021, he has been cited for over 23,000 times and his H-index is 80. Besides, he was named by Guide2Research in 2020 as one of the top 1000 computer scientists in the world, ranked #18 in mainland China. Professor LI is extremely influential in the areas of multimedia, internet, AI and IoT. He had worked as EIC and DEIC positions of core IEEE Transactions and trained 4 MIT TR35 winners.
